Why does France speak a language of Romantic origin, rather than of Germanic origin? Weren't the Franks Germanic?

Heard “Rural Purge” and thought it was part of the Holodomor, but it’s US networks canceling Green Acres & Beverly Hillbillies in the 60s/70s in favor of more contemporary fare like Mary Tyler Moore & All in the Family. Any other events that sound similarly ominous but aren’t?
